San Gregorio Ranch State Beach Will Require Clothing When It Opens in July

San Gregorio Ranch State Beach in San Mateo County, long regarded as one of California's earliest nude beaches, is due to open on July 29, 2026 with a clothing-required rule. The Peninsula Open Space Trust bought the property in spring 2025 and plans to donate it to the state park system later this year. A representative of Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, which will help run the site, says nudity isn't allowed at state parks. Dogs are also barred. A longtime visitor quoted in the report called the change counterintuitive.

Why it matters

It shows how a change of ownership can end informal clothing-optional use: once land joins the state park system, the state's rules apply.
