How Sandy Hook Got Its Nude Beach Signs

In July 1992, Jack Egbert and volunteers from the Sandy Hook Suns placed three white metal signs at New Jersey’s Gunnison Beach, alerting visitors they might encounter nude sunbathers. The National Park Service had requested the signage, and several naturist groups—including the Tri‑State Metro Naturists, the American Sunbathing Association, and the Eastern Sunbathing Association—shared the $700 cost. Superintendent Skip Cole coordinated the effort by contacting Toni Egbert, chair of the Naturist Action Committee, shortly before the Fourth of July.
